Tomorrow, in the early morning, music collectors will be ceremoniously lining up out-front of their favorite record stores in celebration of 2023’s Record Store Day.
Record Store Day (RSD) is annually celebrated by nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. Every year, hundreds of special releases debut on RSD. Fans will have a chance to get their hands on limited editions, special anniversary re-releases, first time prints, and many more unique music drops only available on RSD.
It doesn’t stop at just vinyl either… CD’s, tapes, box sets, posters, apparel; everything for the music fan gets some love on RSD. No matter what you listen to, fans of every genre of music will find something to get excited about. Many of these releases are not sold anywhere else and extremely limited. All items are apart of limited runs… some ranging from 10,000 to others only 500… divvied up distributed across the all stores participating.
4 Lincoln record stores are participating:
- First Day Vinyl, 7301 S 27th St #120
- Lefty’s Records, 2776 South St, Lincoln
- Lincoln Vintage Vinyl, 908 N 70th St
- Backtrack Records, 1549 N Cotner Blvd
KLIN News spoke with Jason Johnson, the Co-owner of Backtrack Records.
“For the music fan community, it gives them an opportunity to get something that’s special, something that’s limited. To have something that was only limited to one particular day, and maybe a special color of vinyl, something like that. If you’re a fan and you want to collect those things, then that gives you an opportunity to get something that maybe a lot of other fans or collectors don’t have.” said Johnson.
There’s maybe no better feeling for a collector than knowing you have something that only maybe 1000 people in the world have.
Johnson gave us his prediction for which records will fly off the shelf first, “There’s a Taylor Swift [release] that’ll probably be one their after… Old Mötley Crüe 40th anniversary picture disc…There’s a Van Halen box set, a Grateful Dead box set, a couple Pearl Jams [records] that that’ll probably get some attention.”
With so many stores vying these releases, sometimes stores don’t always get their whole RSD order filled. “We got good fills this year…were gonna have a pretty good day I think,” Johnson said with joy, “Just a really neat, fun event” he ended.
All Lincoln stores will be opening their doors at 7 A.M.
