When Nebraska football has its home opener next fall, a portion of the stadium will look a bit different.

Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts announced on Sports Night Tuesday that the original east balcony will transform into a new club level. The new seating will mirror the club level in West Stadium.

The update will result in a reduction of more than 600 seats.

Instead of being part of the holistic vision for stadium improvements, Alberts said the move is more out of necessity.

“We really needed to do this a year ago, frankly,” Alberts said. “We kind of held off because I wanted to see whether the entire stadium project would move forward. But we just can’t wait.

“So we’ll move forward and get that waterproofing done in transitioning those to chair backs and club seats.”

Current donation values per seat for that area, sections 101-111, range from $750 to $1,500. Those values will increase to $1,500 to $2,500.

Alberts said “hard letters” have been sent to fans on the upcoming changes. Current ticketholders will have the option to stay in the same area, with the increased cost, or relocate to an area that better fits their desired budget.

East Stadium last saw major changes with the 2013 expansion that added more than 6,000 seats, new concourses, and luxury boxes, among other areas and amenities.
