The Tunnels to Towers 5k run/walk is tomorrow at 9:00 a.m at Holmes Lake North Shore. All proceeds will go the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation, which has raised money for the families of first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty.
The Tunnel 2 Towers organization pays off the mortgage for families of fallen first responders with young children, including LPD Investigator Mario Herrera’s family.
“Carrie Herrera was actually a recipient of Tunnel 2 Towers payoff,” says LFR’s Nancy Crist. “She said they contacted her and took over the payments right away, and then paid it off.”
Lincoln police officers and firefighters will be running in their gear in honor of those first responders who gave all on 9/11. Crist says Herrera will be honored by investigators who worked with and the fire fighters who took care of him when he was shot in the line of duty two years ago.
