I don’t know about you, but our house went into mourning the day Taco Bell announced the elimination of the Mexican Pizza 1 year and 5 months ago.
I have to say, I am a fan of Taco Bell, despite some of the oddities that happen when I go there, like the day I went there to try their breakfast burrito. I was all excited to try it. I love Taco Bell burritos, but it was the commercial with Lil Nas X that pushed me to go for a test drive of their breakfast burrito…
…only to go there and order one and was told, ‘I’m sorry sir, but we don’t have any eggs this morning. Would you like to order our hashbrowns?”
Um…no. While I have to give the guy props for trying to to keep me around for their breakfast, potatoes in lieu of eggs just didn’t work. Sadly, I still haven’t had one, not because I am mad, I keep forgetting to go there for breakfast.
But I digress…
When the Mexican Pizza went away, my wife was pissed (and a bit weepy). It was the one thing she enjoyed from there. She went so far to boycott them (for a while), as her way of civil disobedience. But alas, nothing changed and she gave up hoping. Though, when I would go there, she would remind me that they go rid of her sole reason to love Taco Bell.
It seems as though, my wife wasn’t the only one who held this strong feeling about this fusion of Mexico and Italy. (Ya, I know, only an American would make a statement like that, but bear with me). Pop star Doja Cat lamented her sadness at the loss of Mexican Pizza about a month ago
Could this have been the catalyst that changed the minds of the corporate heads of Taco Bell?
As of yesterday, you could hear the world rejoicing when the announcement was made that the Mexican Pizza is making it’s grand return to the menu on May 19th!
When the word got out on social media, I not only got a text message from my wife, but it was a major topic of our phone conversation last night. She, and I am sure many other people, felt that their silent protest was heard.

The question still remains, why did Taco Bell remove the item from their menu in the first place? It isn’t like this item that been on the menu since 1985 wasn’t selling, though they tried to say that it was part of removal of menu items during the pandemic. The real reason?
It used too much paper to package. While I am not into waste, there are better ways to handle something like this…like finding better packaging. I mean look at Starbucks. They removed straws and created new cups that killed off their paper cups and created plastic cups and plastic lids…which has created more unbiodegradable waste than their original biodegradable cups. (Though it was a great excuse raise the cup of coffee)
Um…no one said businesses make smart decisions. But at least Taco Bell has walked back a bad decision.
Get ready, May 19th will be be here before you know it. And if you have their app, you can get a head start on May 17th.
