Lincoln police are asking drivers to watch for runners and expect brief traffic delays Saturday as the Market to Market Relay makes its way from Omaha to Lincoln. LPD Captain Todd Kocian says the relay route generally follows the MoPac Trail but crosses several city streets, where officers will be stationed to help direct traffic and keep runners safe.
“As you approach those locations where the event is going on, keep an eye out for the officers directing the traffic, but also keep an eye out for the runners in the event,” Kocian says. He estimates about 600 teams will participate, with six to eight runners per team. That could mean between 3,600 and 4,800 participants in the event.
Runners are expected to begin arriving in Lincoln around 1:15 p.m., with the event continuing until approximately 8:45 p.m. Kocian says streets will not be closed for the relay, but drivers may need to wait briefly when runners cross an intersection.
Police are encouraging motorists to slow down, follow officers’ directions and remain alert throughout the event.
