Home sweep home. The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team opened the newly-renovated John Cook Arena with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 sweep of New Mexico Thursday. A crowd of 10,497 filled the expanded John Cook Arena after offseason renovations added seats and amenities to the Cornhuskers’ (5-0) home arena.
Teraya Sigler and Manaia Ogbechie piled up nine kills each. Sigler hit an efficient .412 while Ogbechie diced the Lobos to a .538 hitting percentage. Ogbechie also lead Nebraska in blocks with five.
The Huskers outhit New Mexico, .356-.046, out-blocked it 7-1 and outserved it six aces to one. The match was completed in a brisk 84 minutes.
Nebraska ran the first 10 points of the match and never looked back, never leading set one by fewer than nine after the early 10-0 run.
The Lobos tied set two at one and four, but a run of 12 Husker points in 15 rallies opened a 16-7 lead and Nebraska cruised from there to win the second.
New Mexico briefly led set three 4-3, but the Huskers ran four straight points to open a 7-4 lead. The Lobos cut NU’s lead to 12-9 before seven straight points by Nebraska blew open the third to lead 19-9, and UNM never challenged again.
