Late summer heat will impact southeast Nebraska for several days. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 1:00 p.m Wednesday through 7:00 p.m. Thursday for Lincoln and Omaha areas.
Forecasters expect heat index values to reach as high as 105 degrees, with overnight lows between 75 and 80 providing little relief. The advisory covers much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Health officials warn that hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses, with several days of heat adding to cumulative stress on the body.
The advisory could be expanded or extended as the heat wave continues. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
Health officials also recommend checking on relatives and neighbors, especially those who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cool location and 911 should be called immediately.
