Lincoln residents are being reminded to clean up and properly dispose of fireworks after Independence Day celebrations. Keep Lincoln and Lancaster County Beautiful and Lincoln Transportation and Utilities say cooled fireworks debris should be soaked in water or sand before being placed in the trash.

Unused or unexploded fireworks should never go into garbage or recycling bins and can be picked up by the Lincoln Bureau of Fire Prevention. “When we all clean up our firework litter, we keep our community a beautiful place to live, work, and play,” says KLLCB Coordinator Sarah Mason says.”

A national study found roadside and waterway litter has dropped 34 percent over the past six years. The Health Department is also offering free yard signs through Thursday encouraging residents to “blow it up, clean it up.” City ordinance allows fireworks only from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 3 and until 11:59 p.m. on July 4.
