The Nebraska Community Blood Bank has declared a blood emergency as supplies have dropped to less than a two-day supply. Donor Recruitment Manager Kari Lundeen tells KLIN News Type O, O negative and O positive are actually below a one day supply.
She is calling on Lincolnites to help out by rolling up their sleeves. “We would love for them to stop by a donor center or a blood drive, no need to make an appointment,” Lundeen says. Blood donations in May are down 15 percent, with the Memorial Day holiday adding to the shortage.
Type O blood is commonly used in emergency situations, which are more common this time of year. “May is actually Trauma Awareness Month. Summer kicks off our trauma season and that increases the need for blood, simply because people are more active, there are more accidents that will happen, Lundeen says.
The blood bank says every donation can help save multiple lives and is urging eligible donors not to wait to give. While appointments aren’t needed, Lundeen says they are encouraged. To schedule an appointment click here.
