Republican Congressman Mike Flood has won reelection in Nebraska’s First Congressional District after Democratic challenger Chris Backemeyer conceded Wednesday morning. Flood says he received a phone call from Backemeyer prior to a Nebraska Republican Party news event Wednesday morning.
Flood praised Backemeyer’s approach to the campaign. “He had a choice of what kind of race to run, and he ran a race that was focused on the issues, and not character assassinations. And we did too,” Flood says.
Backemeyer also issued a statement following his phone call with Flood. “I am so proud of the movement we built, proud of the campaign we ran, and proud that we focused on the issues that mattered to Nebraskans. Together, we motivated thousands of Nebraskans to make their voices heard, hold our government accountable, and send a message that the status quo isn’t good enough.”
Backemeyer also told supporters this wasn’t the outcome he had hoped for and that is was an honor of his lifetime to be their nominee. “I will carry your stories and experiences with me every day. Thank you for your support, and I wish Congressman Flood success in guiding Nebraska through the challenges facing our state and our country.”
Flood will continue representing Nebraska’s First Congressional District, which includes Lincoln and much of eastern Nebraska. Additional election results are available at the Nebraska Secretary of State website.
