A man was taken to a Lincoln hospital Wednesday morning after cutting his neck with a piece of broken glass inside the Hall of Justice in downtown Lincoln. Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the incident happened on the second floor after a judge revoked the man’s bond, meaning he would be returned to jail.

Houchin says the man pulled a piece of broken glass from his pocket and cut his neck. The injury is not considered life-threatening, but the man will need stitches. “He has been taken to a local hospital where he’s receiving treatment, and after that will be taken to jail,” Houchin says.

Houchin praised deputies for their response, saying they quickly took the man into custody and got medical assistance to him. He says incidents involving weapons inside the courthouse are uncommon.

“This is the first time an edged weapon has gone through, but again, it is a piece of glass, and so that’s a little bit different than what our equipment up there is looking for,” Houchin says. The man’s age was not immediately available and the incident remains under investigation.

Houchin says no law enforcement officers were injured and all deputies are safe.
