Nebraska voters preparing for the Nov. 3 general election should check their registration, confirm their polling place and make sure they have an acceptable photo ID, AARP Nebraska State Director Todd Stubbendieck told KLIN News. “It’s always important to remind people that if they’re going to polls to vote, they need to bring that photo ID,” he said.
Accepted IDs include a Nebraska driver’s license or state ID, a U.S. passport, and military or tribal ID. Stubbendieck noted that a photo record from an eligible assisted living or long-term care facility can also be used. Nebraskans who need an ID for voting can get a free state ID through the DMV.
A registered voter who forgets an ID can cast a provisional ballot, but must present an acceptable ID in person at the county election office by the Tuesday after the election for that ballot to count. For voters requesting an early ballot, the ID requirement is handled with the application: They can provide a Nebraska driver’s license or state ID number, a copy of another acceptable photo ID, or a reasonable impediment certification.
The state’s deadline to register online or have a mailed registration postmarked is Oct. 16. Voters can register in person at their county election office until 6 p.m. Oct. 23. Stubbendieck encouraged voters to check their information ahead of time; they can confirm their registration and polling place through Nebraska’s voter lookup and find more information on the Secretary of State’s voter ID page.
