The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is offering financial incentives to nursing homes and assisted-living facilities interested in starting or expanding child care services.

DHHS announced Thursday that applications are open for the state’s Intergenerational Care Facility Incentive Grant program. A total of $200,000 is available, with eligible facilities able to receive a one-time grant of up to $100,000.

The grants are open to nonprofit and for-profit nursing homes and assisted-living facilities operating in Nebraska. Funding may be used for structural modifications, outdoor campus improvements, child care equipment and supplies, or a combination of those expenses.

State officials said the program is intended to address gaps in child care services while creating opportunities for interaction between young children and residents of senior-care facilities.

To qualify, a facility must document that it meets Nebraska’s statutory definition of a nursing home or assisted-living facility. Applicants must also:

* Be certified to participate in Medicare or Medicaid.
* Have no citation for substandard quality of care during the facility’s most recent survey.
* Not have previously received an Intergenerational Care Facility Incentive Grant.
* Submit a plan to participate in Nebraska’s child care quality rating and improvement system within three years of receiving the grant.

Grants will be awarded to eligible Nebraska facilities until the available funds have been distributed.

The application materials, amendments, and additional information are posted on the DHHS Grant Opportunities webpage under “Grant Funding Opportunity Announcements.
