Property owners in five Lincoln neighborhoods are being encouraged to sign up now for the next phase of the city’s Lead Safe Lincoln Lead Service Line Replacement Program.
Lincoln Transportation and Utilities says property owners in the Clinton, Capitol View and portions of the Hawley, Near South and South Salt Creek Area neighborhoods are now eligible to have qualifying lead or lead-contaminated galvanized water service lines replaced at no cost.
The city says the program is designed to reduce potential sources of lead exposure while replacing aging water service lines throughout Lincoln.
“This program provides eligible property owners with an opportunity to replace lead and lead contaminated galvanized water service lines while helping protect public health,” LTU Director Liz Elliott said. “By participating, property owners are helping address these service lines in their homes while supporting a community-wide effort to make progress toward a lead-free Lincoln.”
The current construction phase includes about 880 eligible properties. So far, 480 property owners have signed participation agreements.
City officials say more than 765 lead service lines have already been replaced as part of the long-term effort to replace about 6,000 record-indicated lead and lead-contaminated galvanized service lines by 2035.
Construction in the newly announced project areas is expected to continue through 2027.
Eligible participants also receive a $100 credit on their Lincoln Water System account to help offset minor restoration costs, such as landscaping or painting, after the work is complete.
The replacement program is funded through a $32.6 million loan made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and administered by the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment. The overall program is expected to cost about $55 million.
