The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department is reporting an increase in Cyclospora cases this month. Health officials say there have been 33 confirmed cases in the county during July, with 30 of those infections acquired in the United States.
“Our investigations are ongoing,” says Health Director Kerry Kernen. “We’re working with state and federal partners as we continue to conduct in-depth interviews with community members who became ill and look for potential commonalities among cases. We’ll provide updates as we learn more.”
Cyclospora is a parasite that causes a gastrointestinal illness and has been linked to several outbreaks across the country. Federal investigators say a multi-state outbreak is most likely tied to recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from Central Mexico, though local health officials say their investigation is continuing.
Cyclospora is commonly spread through contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables or water. It is not spread from person to person. Symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, cramping, bloating and weight loss. Anyone experiencing symptoms is urged to contact a health care provider.
