Lincoln Police say an 18-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a traffic stop turned into a foot chase Friday afternoon.

Just before 3 p.m., an officer conducting traffic enforcement near 27th and J Streets spotted a speeding vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Police say the driver continued to the Casey’s gas station at 25th and O Streets, where he parked and immediately ran from the vehicle.

After what authorities described as a lengthy chase, officers arrested 18-year-old Niall Alhilali of Lincoln. Investigators say Alhilali had three outstanding arrest warrants.

During the investigation, officers learned Alhilali allegedly discarded a firearm while running. Police later recovered a 9-millimeter handgun in the area where he fled.

Investigators also determined the vehicle Alhilali was driving had been taken without the owner’s permission.

Alhilali was booked into the Lancaster County Jail on his outstanding warrants and for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was also cited for speeding, driving under suspension, refusing to comply with a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon without disclosure, and tampering with physical evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
