The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its longtime residents. Zoo officials announced Thursday the passing of Zeus, a bobcat who spent more than 19 years at the zoo and became a favorite among staff and visitors.

At more than 24 years old, Zeus was the oldest bobcat living in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo. Officials say his long life was a reflection of the care and dedication from the team members who looked after him.

Zoo staff say as Zeus aged, he developed arthritis that was treated by the zoo’s veterinary team. But in recent months, the condition progressed and began affecting his mobility and quality of life. After careful observation and discussions, the zoo made the decision to humanely euthanize Zeus.

Zoo officials say Zeus was known for his intelligence and unique personality. His care team worked hard to earn his trust, and he enjoyed enrichment activities including boxes, balls, peacock feathers, and a cue ball that became his favorite for years. He also loved scent enrichment, with favorites including fresh dill, celery, peppers, paprika, pizza boxes, and camel and llama fur.

Most bobcats live between five and 15 years in the wild and about 18 years in human care.
