The Nebraska Poison Center is reminding families to take extra precautions this summer as outdoor activities and holiday celebrations increase the risk of injuries and poison exposures.
Education Coordinator Jen Rohda says fireworks can cause serious burns and eye injuries, with sparklers accounting for many injuries involving children. They also caution parents to keep glow sticks away from young children, as the liquid inside can irritate the eyes and mouth if released.
The Poison Center recommends using insect repellents as directed, storing fuels such as gasoline and lighter fluid securely out of children’s reach, and following proper food safety practices at cookouts and picnics.
Experts also warn about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from generators, charcoal grills, propane equipment, and boat exhaust. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and drowsiness.
The Nebraska Poison Center provides free, confidential assistance around the clock. Anyone with questions about a possible poisoning can call 1-800-222-1222 to speak with a registered nurse or pharmacist.
