Ahead of the busy Memorial Day weekend, The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is encouraging campers and boaters to plan ahead, check weather conditions, and put safety first while enjoying Nebraska’s lakes and parks.
Spokesman Greg Wagner says there are some first-come-first-served campsites available across the area. “Check out some of the smaller Salt Valley lakes and some of the more primitive, the more rustic campsites that we have.” Wagner says those campsites will have fewer people.
Some of those lakes include Conestoga, Pawnee and Yankee Hill. Wagner says bring extra supplies, including drinking water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and first-aid items. In addition, be mindful of fire safety and follow any burn restrictions.
Wagner says boaters should wear or carry properly fitted life jackets, avoid alcohol while operating a boat, and be mindful of the water temperatures. “Even though the air temperatures are going to feel warm, our water temperatures are going to feel cold,” Wagner says. “Hypothermia could be a risk, so keep an eye on everybody and all the more reason to wear a life jacket in a boat.”
You can also skip the kiosk and buy your Nebraska Vehicle Park Entry Permit before you get to the park. Get one at OutdoorNebraska.gov, at statewide Nebraska Game and Parks offices and permit vendors. This permit is required of each vehicle entering a Nebraska state park.
Wagner says be sure and check the forecast and stay aware of changing conditions. If your plans include fishing, he says permits can be purchased in advance online and there are options to print permits at home.
Wagner says while you are outdoors, keep an eye on the weather forecasts. Storms can pop up quickly, and sudden changes in weather can lead to rocky water and potential lightning strikes, both of which put swimmers and boaters at risk.
