For the second straight day, the No. 25 Nebraska baseball mounted a late comeback with a three-run seventh to top Iowa, 8-6, Sunday at Hawks Field in Lincoln. The victory finished off a Cornhuskers’ (37-14, 20-7 Big Ten) weekend sweep of the Hawkeyes (29-21, 12-15 Big Ten).
With the game tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, a two-run double by Dylan Carey gave Nebraska the lead. A Drew Grego RBI single pushed the lead to 8-5. Kooper Schulte homered in the top of the eighth to pull Iowa within two, but the Hawkeyes drew no closer.
Iowa took a 2-0 lead half an inning into the game. But after Joshua Overbeek drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run in the bottom of the first, a Mac Moyer sacrifice fly in the second tied the game at two. Will Jesske clubbed a massive home run later that inning to left to give NU a 3-2 lead. Then in the third, Jett Buck homered to push the Huskers’ lead to 4-2. A Rhett Stokes RBI single boosted the Nebraska lead to 5-2. Iowa scored three in the top of the fifth before the Huskers broke the tie in the seventh.
Carey paced the Nebraska lineup in his final home game, hitting 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Case Sanderson, Grego, and Buck all had two hits each as well.
The Huskers now prepare for their final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha against Creighton. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with pregame coverage at 5:30 p.m. on KLIN.
