A site has been selected for development of a new downtown convention center.  Assemble Lincoln announced Thursday it will be located on the Garfield public/private site near 13th and ‘M’ Streets.

“That is the site directly outside the front doors looking east of the Cornhusker Hotel,” says Assemble Lincoln member Jeff Maul.  “There is a block over there that is primed for development.  Just super happy to be involved with the process and part of something that is truly going to enhance the tourism skyline.”

There were two other sites that were in the running,  the post office in the Haymarket and the site near 10th and N streets, where the Gold’s building used to be.   Maul says they envision the convention center being used to host a variety of events.

“This project is about more than building a new venue. It’s about driving innovation, fostering economic growth, and creating opportunities for our community to thrive, says Senator Elliot Bostar, chair of Assemble Lincoln.  “This is a bold step forward, and I’m proud to be part of it.”

Lancaster County Board Member Sean Flowerday says, “It has been an honor to work alongside a world-class team to bring forward this opportunity and Lancaster County is excited
to be partners in creating a state-of-the-art facility for our community.”

Maul says the next steps include reaching out to landowners, submitting Lancaster County’s Turn Back Tax application to the state, and establishing a timeline for approval of the application , design and construction.
