The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department will be holding it’s annual “Put the Beds to Bed” this Saturday morning at 8:30 at the Sunken Gardens at 26th and “D” streets.
Staff have been working this week to remove the annual plants. “When volunteers come, they will just see bare dirt,” says Public Gardens Volunteer Coordinator Cindy Poehling. “We the staff will be loading the bed with compost and they’re going to help us turn the compost into soil.”
More than 60 volunteers are signed up and Poehling says there is room for more. They are asked to bring gloves, a shovel or spade, and dress in layered clothing that may get dirty, including heavy-soled shoes.
There is a chance of rain Saturday and Poehling says if that happens they will move the event to the following Saturday. To volunteer contact Poehling at cpoehling@lincoln.ne.gov.
