Before the bitter winter cold befalls Lincoln, local YMCA’s are hosting their 4th annual winter coat drive for the People’s City Mission.
From October 1-21, donation drop-off barrels will be stationed at all four Lincoln YMCA’s and other partnering locations to collect both gently used and new coats.
“This initiative started back in 2021 for our 150th anniversary. At the YMCA we’ve always wanted to stay true to our mission of supporting the community through programs really focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” said Samantha Huff, YMCA of Lincoln Marketing Director. “It’s been a great effort amongst the community, and it’s something that we hope continues for a really long time.”
Over the past three years, this initiative has collected more than 8,500 coats from YMCA members and the Lincoln community.
Community members who donate at the YMCA will receive a free pass to “Try the Y” for one week, valid through the end of the year. Current YMCA members donating coats will have a chance to win a free Y Membership for 2025.
“Nebraska winters are extremely tough on folks, especially if you don’t have a roof over your head… I know it might not feel like it on days like today when it’s 90 degrees outside, but winter will be here before we know it and this will be so helpful for those that are staying in shelter,” Huff added.
With over 250 guests currently residing at the mission, that number could climb to 400 as the colder months set in.
The drive will conclude on October 21, culminating in a coat distribution at the People’s City Mission Help Center starting at 9:00am on Friday, November 8.
Donations can be dropped off at any of the following YMCA of Lincoln locations:
- Cooper YMCA – 6767 S. 14th Street
- Copple Family YMCA – 8700 Yankee Woods Drive
- Fallbrook YMCA – 700 Penrose Drive
- Northeast YMCA – 2601 N. 70th Street
Broadcast House is also hosting a drop-off barrel in our front lobby, 4343 “O” Street.
