Lincoln Children’s Zoo Welcomes Newborn Humboldt Penguin

By Chase Porter Apr 30, 2024 | 11:23 AM

On Thursday, April 4, 2024, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo said hello to it’s newest member.

A Humboldt penguin chick hatched that day in Lincoln to they’re mom, Sharkbait, and dad, John Henry, after a “very attentive” incubation period of 43-48 days.

“They took turns keeping the egg warm by sitting on it in the nest box they prepared. Since hatching, both parents have taken turns guarding their chick, keeping it warm and feeding it by regurgitating partially digested food into the chick’s mouth,” said LCZ, in their reveal on social media.

Sharkbait and Mr. Henry are currently caring for it in a nest box behind-the-scenes. The chick will spend its time behind-the-scenes for the next few weeks as it continues to grow and develop its waterproof feathers.

The chick is not currently visible to guests, and it’s too early to determine the sex of the chick. The penguin’s sex and name will be announced at a later date by LCZ.
