Multiple people were injured after a Friday afternoon tornado ripped through Lancaster County and struck the Garner Industries building between the cities of Waverly and Lincoln, causing the roof to collapse.
The Lancaster County Sherriff’s Office confirmed just after 4:15 p.m. Friday — at approximately 03:00 p.m., LSO responded to a distress call regarding a tornado striking the industrial building located at 7201 North 98th Street. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered that the building had collapsed, trapping several individuals inside.
“There were approximately 70 employees inside the building when the tornado hit,” said Chief Deputy Ben Houchin.
Fortunately, Houchin was able to confirm that everyone had been evacuated from the building. Three individuals sustained injuries during the ordeal and were transported to nearby hospitals. Houchin said their injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
In addition to the incident at Garner Industries, the LSO received reports of a semi-truck overturned at mile marker 409 and a train derailment near Waverly, Nebraska.
The public is urged to refrain from approaching the affected area to facilitate ongoing emergency operations.
