A few years ago, Elton John and Miley Cyrus performed Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”, where Elton called it one of the greatest songs ever written, which made James tear up. I mean who wouldn’t be emotional about a compliment from a legend like Elton John.
It came as not surprise that Metallica would return the favor to Sir Elton John. But who would have guessed that this tip of the hat came in the form of performing “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” on the 2024 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
When I heard about this cover I was a bit skeptical. I mean, Elton’s version is iconic. So much so, that you would would be hard pressed to identify anyone covering it, much less Metallica…
