NSP Troopers Assist More Than 900 Stranded Motorists During Storm

Nebraska State Patrol troopers spent hours assisting people who became stranded during and after Friday’s snow storm.  “We had almost 900 motorist assists and in some cases that’s a month worth,” says Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas.  “We still have reports of people that are still out there, but no one that we are not in communication with.”

Thomas says the drifts were so high in some areas it took an NDOT plow to clear a path so troopers could reach stranded motorists.  “NDOT would plow a roadway and it would seem like it was safe for travel but then as the wind blew it blew the snow right back on the road and essentially trapped them in that position.  There was no way they were going to get out,” Thomas says.

There are any slick roads across the area and with the bitterly cold temperatures Thomas says if you do have to travel today check 511 and make sure the route you’re intending to take is clear. If you get stuck in the snow stay in your vehicle and call * 55. A trooper will be dispatched to your location.
