Lincoln’s recent stint of severe winter weather will not stop the city’s youth from honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on his federal holiday.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year, and for the last 29 years, Lincoln has hosted a youth rally and march to commemorate the civil rights icon. However this year, bitter weather conditions forced the rally’s Planning Committee to rearrange 2024’s event schedule.

“We are dedicated to upholding the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by providing three alternate opportunities to celebrate his legacy,” said their official website. The 2024 event schedule is as follows:

(Monday, January 15th) A pre-recorded program was streamed this morning, showcasing a “montage” of some notable pieces from the last 29 years, including learning segments, insight and speeches from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., prior rally segments, and previews of new parts to be unveiled on January 19th & 20th. This program can be viewed below.

(Friday, January 19th) A Youth Rally ‘Call to Action’ will be live-streamed from 1:30-2:30 p.m. This program will be abbreviated to encourage and promote viewing by schools and youth and adult organizations. This program will be streamed via the LNKTV Education website, LNKTV YouTube, and the City of Lincoln Facebook and available on Lincoln (NE) Cable Access Channels • ALLO 23.

(Saturday, January 20th) An in-person ‘Call to Action’ Program will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Centennial Room of the Nebraska Union – on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This event will not be streamed.
