By Tom Stanton Nov 3, 2023 | 2:58 PM

Southwest High School has announced that Chris Nelson will be the new head girls wrestling coach for the Silver Hawks. “I want to continue the Southwest legacy of championship wrestling,” Nelson says. “I want to build the girls’ program to a place where we’re at a championship level. I don’t think I would be doing my job as a coach if it was anything less.”

Nelson was a four-time state wrestling qualifier at Lincoln High School and has many years of coaching expertise. “Coach Nelson has loads of wrestling experience, including previous head coaching experience,” Southwest Activities Director Andrew Sherman says. “Chris has earned the respect of the wrestling community and has built meaningful relationships throughout his career. Coach Nelson’s passion for wrestling, his coaches and his athletes will make him a great fit for this position.”

Nelson was head coach of the Lincoln Christian/Lincoln Lutheran co-op boys wrestling program from 2009-2014. He has also served as a volunteer assistant on Southwest’s boys wrestling staff. Southwest is scheduled to begin the girls wrestling season Nov. 30 at the Standing Bear Invitational.
