Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews were called to the Harper Dining Center on the UNL campus just before 5:00 Tuesday afternoon. LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says they found a fire in a room in the basement.
She says the sprinkler system kept the fire at bay, but the smoke began filtering through the tunnel system that connects to Harper, Schram and Smith Hall. She says students in Smith Hall had to be evacuated due to the smoke.
Lierman says some items caught on fire in the room, but the exact cause is not yet known. The investigation is continuing.
