Lancaster County Killer Seeks Scheduling of Execution Date

Aubrey Trail, the convicted murderer in the 2017 death of Sydney Loofe of Lincoln, has petitioned the state to schedule his execution date.

The petition requests the consideration of Gov. Jim Pillen, Department of Corrections Director Rob Jeffrey, and Attorney General Mike Hilgers—according to court documents filed Monday in Lancaster County—to set a date for his death sentence.

The petition articulates that Trail, “does not wish to conduct any further litigation staying the execution of his death sentence,” referring to a 2022 decision from the Nebraska Supreme Court to uphold his death sentence.

Trail and his girlfriend, Bailey Boswell, were both found guilty of Loofe’s murder and sentenced in 2021. Boswell received life in prison for her role in the murder. Evidence revealed Trail and Boswell had devised a plan to kill Loofe after Boswell met her through the dating app Tinder. After the second date, Loofe disappeared. Her body parts were found scattered in 14 locations near Wilber, Neb.

Nebraska’s last execution took place in 2018, and before then, 1997.
