Why The Hollywood Actor and Writer’s Strike is a Good Thing for Couch Potatoes Like Me

Jul 21, 2023 | 8:10 AM

I could really care about the lives of people in Hollywood, the movie industry, award shows, movie/TV reboots and the like. But I, like many people, have my favorite shows and movies that I have not seen because…well, I have a life. While my life may be boring as hell to everyone else (and to me too, sometimes), I normally have better things to do than make sure my ass is in front of the flat screen in my living room or bedroom, especially since I am a VERY active parent. However, I do hate that I miss out on a lot of shows that I really enjoy. Hell, there are shows that have run their course and have ended and I STILL haven’t even finished season 1.

Now, that may seem like “First World Problems”…and it is, but when I have been trying to finish shows like the current season of Deadliest Catch, the now cancelled Fringe, Star Trek: Brave New Worlds and RuPaul’s Drag Race (Yes, I watch it. Laugh all you want…and Fuck you. It is funny as hell to watch).

So why is this current writer’s and actor’s strike a good thing? Because anyone who has a life and only can carve out an hour here or there will now have the ability to not feel like you are in a never ending loop of saying “fuck it” and never catch up. Since the strike is happening, their world has come to a dead stop. It’s kind of like COVID, Hollywood was shut down.

While everyone was lauding moronic shows like Tiger King (you binge-watched it, you can admit it), along with cancelled shows like Manifest (that show was even brought back to life because of Netflix). We all got caught up and then the onslaught of shows started rolling out when the restrictions ended, then we got buried again with new shows and continued episode of our favorites.

I don’t know about you, but I was back in the same boob-tube hole I was in before the plandemic, but worse.

You see, I remember when there were actual seasons of my favorite shows. And a season meant that the show would have 24-26 episodes a year…A YEAR…and then you got a summer of re-runs and “replacement” series that were considered pilots that the networks weren’t sure were going to work. Sometimes they would. Night Court was one of the most legendary success stories. Now is a season is 13-20 episodes and you get a whopping 3 weeks before the next season starts.

I still scratch my head when I look on IMDB or Wikipedia and see that a show was on for 5 years and had 7-10 seasons. This has been going on for over a decade. Most likely because we like to spend more time on our asses watching shit TV like Divorce Court and Real Housewives and eating Moon Pies.

Now, with this strike, we can FINALLY get caught up on our shows and movies. Even if I get 10 minutes, I no longer have to get frustrated that I will never get behind on watching.

Then there are the shows, we have tagged as our favorite that we NEVER get to watch. We now get a chance to see them…FINALLY!!!

Now, I get the reason that everyone is Hollywood is up in arms. It has to do with AI. Writers aren’t getting paid very well for their shows on streaming services and the actors are freaking out about AI taking their likeness and using it for movies and TV shows, then paying them a lower fee for not doing anything. I will admit, it could be seen as a form of identity theft.

Anyway, I am taking advantage of this chance to get caught up on some TV watching, because you and I both know, when this strike is over, we will be behind again.
