After living in so many states across this great nation of ours, I have learned that every place has a slang term for what we would call things that are common place, like soda is called Pop in the Mid-West, but it all sodas are called Coke in Texas.
So the question came up about what names do each state use for loved ones.
Terms of endearment fall like this:
- Baby Daddy: That one is pretty common everywhere, but it it seems to be prevalent in Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia
- Baby Girl: Not so popular, but the do like it in Arkansas and Kansas
- Bae: This one is kind of annoying, to me. If you can say Bae, why can’t you say the whole word…baby. Regardless, Indiana, Louisiana, New Hampshire and South Carolina make it their favorites
- Boo: A classic. This one has transition from the 90’s and still popular in North Carolina, Alaska, North Dakota and Idaho
- Cutie: Probably the most popular and can be found in Arizona, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin
- Hubby: Here we go. You will find this one, right here in Nebraska, our neighbor to the right, Iowa and Vermont
- Shorty: Could you get more Hip-Hop? While the word seems a bit cliché’, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia like it A LOT.
- Sweetie: I like this one. Call my daughter this one a lot, so do people in: Hawaii, Maine, Mississippi and New Mexico
- Hubby: The the one word that is the opposite of Nebraska’s favorite, but a fave in California , Colorado and Rhode Island
Some other words that Nebraska REALLY likes when it comes to:
- Gaming (like sports, gambling, etc.)
- gg (I many have lived here for 4 years, I have no clue what this means.
- Crypto (as in Cryptocurrency)
- Defi (huh?)
- Favorite Gen-Z wor
- Squad (I do wish we used Boomer more, but we can still get there)
- Hip Hop:
- Clip
While some of the words we use in Nebraska make us sound like dorks, I can’t say that pogger for Gaming, Mooning for Crypto, Finna for Gen-Z and Fetty for Hip-Hop Culture sounds much better.
