Horror Movies Set In Nebraska

By Steve King Oct 25, 2022 | 10:15 AM

It’s that time of year when all the movie channels pull out the horror films. Some of classics, others are true B-rate movies. Either way, it is worth noting that quite a few movies have been set in Nebraska…a lot more than you may think, but I figured that since it is the season of scary, why not make a list of horror/scary movies that were made in our fair state:

  • Children of the Corn – I am talking about the ENTIRE series. That should make us all proud. A lot of times, horror movies move from location to location. What is very interesting is that this is a Steven King book-turned-movie (sequels are merely based on the original), this isn’t based in Maine, like most of his works. Of course, I don’t think corn is a exactly a major crop in Maine, so why not Nebraska
  • The Gallows –  This was a total flop, but hey, it was based in all places in Beatrice at a high school On October 28, 1993. It is all about a school play that went wrong when the star of the play hanged himself by accident and it was covered up, but the cover-up went wrong.
  • Halloween III: Season of the Witch – A lame 3rd part of the Halloween series made in 1982 . It was set in Omaha, but that is about as much as we glean from this this crappy movie about Nebraska. Oh ya, it was completely filmed in California, so this movie sucked for more than one reason.
  • Hex – A 1973 B-movie set in the rural town of Bingo, NE…which there is no such place. A group of young adults found this (imaginary) town for a drag race. After one of the racers attempted to rape Oriele’s sister Acaia (the main characters), Oriele casts a hex on her sister’s rapist. The rest of the movie devolves into this weird witch/wiccan thing that hexes are made with effigies, hair in toad mouths, even using their father’s shaman’s outfit. A true B-rate WTF movie.
  • Husk – OK, at least we have a general idea this is a movie from the Husker state. This is a movie that came out in 2011, but was a remake of the movie Scarecrow (which was NOT set in Nebraska) from 1988. In this adaptation, of the 1988 movie, a family’s car is attacked by a flock of crows in rural Nebraska and they are left to find shelter in a farmhouse that has lots of dead bodies and the owner is a found to be a murderer. As we know, blood bubbles up from the ground in Nebraska, if you don’t, it does in this non-descript Nebraska location. The Sundance Festival liked it a lot…the rest of us had no idea this movie was even made.
  • There’s a Stranger In  Your House – This one came out during the pandemic in 2021 and, yep, it is what it says it is. Set in Osborn, NE and it is your typical slasher film. There are people killed in confessionals at church and parties. I find this movie kind of funny, as Osborn is a city of 39,000 and they have Ubers. This movie is so all over the place and is kinda woke, as it implies that Nebraskans are racist and homophobic .
