Things Inappropriate For Work…Which You Should Know Already

By Steve King Jul 19, 2022 | 9:08 AM

In radio, dress codes are are pretty lax. You see tattered shirts that the DJs got for free from advertisers and/or Rock bands promoting a song or album. (DJ’s do this, first because they are cheap. Second, they get paid shit money)

But let’s look at what is and isn’t acceptable, which unless you are complete dolt, you should already know: (most radio people, for some reason, don’t know these, so let me out line this for everyone)

  • Beach wear: cheap flip-flops and banana hammocks are, usually, not ok.
  • Cycling gear: skin-tight shorts and those yellow dry-fit shirts, again, not ok (though we do have someone here at the radio station who doesn’t always remember this)
  • Dungarees: If you aren’t sure about this one, I am kind of too. They aren’t jeans, but they are jeans. It is pants and pretty much any kind of pants that use denim.

Personally, I wear Untuckit shirts and jean with a vans or Wolverine boots, which isn’t “classy”, but it fits my personality and is appropriate in the office. Basically, I keep it classy enough to meet you, friends of ours and advertisers.

While I have a decent selection of clothes, I worked with a guy who had no fucking clue what respectable was. He would wear 70’s running shorts, see-through hole-laden shirts dingy socks and dirty New Balance shoes. What really as disgusting. you could see his soiled tighty whites…his shorts and undies were so thin you could see it when he shit is pants at a remote broadcast. This “tub of goo”, was the morning DJ on a Top 40 station, which you would THINK could make someone look their best.

I digress, the “shit-pants” man pretty much…no he DID break ALL the rules of what not to wear to work.

If you need a primer of what is ok and what is not, there are 2 ways to handle this:

  • Use this website to discover your style: Andrew-Sykes
    • Or just follow this guide on SWSN Digital. This is a bit more specific for men and women. The Top 5 looks like this:
      • Men (pretty much all mentioned above) :
        • Gym Shorts
        • Gym clothes
        • Cycling gear
        • Flip Flops
        • Dungerees
      • Women:
        • Gym Gear
        • Bralettes
        • Crop Top
        • Crocs
        • Flip Flops

So basically, use some goddamn common sense.
