Flying On A Plane Makes You Fart

Have you ever been on a plane and had the uncontrollable need to fart?

Many years ago, an ex and I were flying to New York City and we experienced that feeling. It wasn’t bubble guts, but we had the best burritos in Tucson AZ and hopped on a plane. It wasn’t like we hadn’t had them before, but what happened next CAN be explained by science.

When the plane took off we felt that full feeling you get then you have to fart…so we both started dropping ass. It started a little at a time…then it continued for 2 hours.

There was a point where we knew that eventually someone was going to complain and we concocted a story that the baby in front of us had a dirty diaper and we kept joking with the parents that the baby was a “gassy little one” and no one was the wiser. Though, I am sure that someone noticed it when we would crop-dust down the aisle when we would go to bathroom.

For years, we both thought it was the burritos, but now I have learned that it occurrs naturally. It is a called HAFE, otherwise known as High-Altitude Flatus Expulsion.

Here is why it happens when the plane takes off, the cabin pressurizes as the outside atmosphere decreases. But that isn’t where it stops. Because farts are gas and some foods do make you a bit “gassy”, the air, or “gas” gets a bit more active in your bowels.

But that isn’t the only reason it happens. Your body naturally produces gas in your bloodstream and it, too, has to be released.

You then have 3 choices, create “air biscuits” in your seat for all around you to enjoy, make a trip the plane’s shitter or suffer.

In the end (pun intended), if you like broccoli, sodas or beans, load up for some fun…or stay away if you want to take a more low-key approach to flying. Truth be told, it probably won’t be as fun, since everyone has to wear a mask on the  flight, so STEP UP YOUR GAS GAME!
